Piers Morgan vs Virender Sehwag, Part II: Rs. 1 million bet backfires

first_imgPopular journalist and British TV personality Piers Morgan has re-ignited the fire by taking a jibe at former India cricketer Virender Sehwag on Twitter on Wednesday. This time Morgan has directly challenged Sehwag, who is yet to come up with a reply so far.Morgan is confident that the England cricket team will win an ODI World Cup before India wins another Olympic gold, and he is willing to bet Rs. 1 million with Sehwag. The money will be donated to charity.Hi @virendersehwag, I bet you 1 million rupees to charity that England wins a ODI World Cup before India wins another Olympic Gold. Accept? Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) August 30, 2016It did not take long for Indian twitterati to take notice and hit back at Morgan as soon as this tweet was posted from his account. People immediately reminded Morgan about India’s glorious past in men’s hockey and how it had already won 8 Olympic gold medals and one individual gold came at the 2008 Beijing Games thanks to ace shooter Abhinav Bindra. Another person even compared Morgan’s bet with Captain Russell’s bet in the 2001 blockbuster film ‘Lagaan’ in which Amir Khan’s cricket team royally shamed the English in their own game.  .@piersmorgan India has 9 Olympic Golds and 2 ODI World Cups. (Piers Morgan mocks India’s celebration over two medals )Morgan had then poked fun at India saying that a country with more than a billion people is celebrating two losing medals. The tweet was absolutely distasteful and condemned by twitterati. (When Sehwag slam-dunked Piers Morgan for mocking India’s Rio performance)Country with 1.2 billion people wildly celebrates 2 losing medals. How embarrassing is that? https://t.co/FYSBM7ErAf Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) August 24, 2016It was the ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ who then stood up for the nation and gave Morgan a fitting reply which went viral within minutes. Terrorism an issue: Sourav Ganguly backs BCCI’s decision to not play cricket with Pakistan

first_imgFormer India captain Sourav Ganguly has backed the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to not play cricket with Pakistan.”Terrorism is an issue and you can’t play cricket (with Pakistan) when people are getting killed at the borders,” Ganguly told India Today.India has been fuming since Pakistan-backed terrorists crossed the Line of Control (LoC) to raid an army camp in Uri and killed 18 soldiers. There has been pressure on the government to respond with military might but the Indian army insisted that they would retaliate in a time and place of their own choosing. (Pakistan sponsor of terrorism, no question of playing cricket with them: Anurag Thakur)Meanwhile, a media report said that India may have already avenged the Uri attacks by sending elite paratroopers across the border to kill terrorists holed up in camps. Angry citizens have come out all guns blazing on social media and suggested that Pakistan be nuked out while many other are clamouring for strong diplomatic steps including international isolation of Paksistan.Earlier, BCCI president Anurag Thakur, also a Member of Parliament, said there was no question of playing cricket with Pakistan and his government’s priority is to expose Pakistan as promoters and sponsors of terrorism.”Priority is to expose Pak as country which sponsors terrorism. No question of playing cricket which such a nation,” Thakur said.Pakistan cricketers have also not been allowed to participate in the cash-rich Indian Premier League since 2009. That has been a cause for heartburn with plenty of Pakistani players but the Indian government and the BCCI has not relented.advertisementThere was talk of a short bilateral series late last year but plans were shelved after the Indian and Pakistani governments failed to come to a conclusion on the venue.India and Pakistan recently played each other during Asia Cup in Dhaka the World T20 at the Eden Gardens. The hosts, riding on Virat Kohli’s sensational batting, won both those games.last_img read more

Donald Tiripano heroics earn Zimbabwe tie with West Indies in tri-series

first_imgZimbabwe seamer Donald Tiripano bowled a superb final over to help his side earn a dramatic tie in their Tri-Series one-day international against West Indies in Bulawayo on Saturday. The visitors lost three wickets, including two run outs, in a desperate last five balls as Tiripano gave them nothing to hit with a succession of full deliveries that restricted the West Indies to 257 for eight.Captain Jason Holder had the chance to win the game off the final ball but could not make contact and wicketkeeper Peter Moor ran out a charging non-striker Jonathan Carter.Zimbabwe celebrated as if they had won the game and well they might after the visitors had seemed sure of victory.West Indies batsman Shai Hope hit 101 from 120 balls, his maiden ODI ton in his second match, and added 162 for the third wicket with Kraigg Brathwaite (78).When he was dismissed West Indies needed 38 runs from 32 balls with seven wickets remaining, but they could not get over the line due to tight bowling and poor shot selection.Zimbabwe won the toss and made 257 all out in exactly 50 overs.Their innings was built around the third-wicket stand of 144 between Craig Ervine (92) and Pakistan-born Sikandar Raza (77), but petered out as they managed only 67 runs from their final seven wickets in 11.2 overs. With all three sides having played two matches, West Indies head the Tri-Series table with seven points from Sri Lanka (five) and Zimbabwe (two).Zimbabwe will be back in action on Monday against Sri Lanka at the same venue. advertisementlast_img read more

Luis Suarez to be offered new contract, says Barcelona president

first_imgBarcelona’s prolific striker Luis Suarez will be offered a new contract with the Spanish champions until 2022, president Josep Maria Bartomeu said on Thursday. The 29-year-old Uruguayan collected the European Golden Shoe last season for the top scorer in domestic football in Europe with 40 league goals, helping Barca’s famed ‘MSN’ trio also containing Messi and Brazilian forward Neymar score a record 131 goals in all competitions.”Suarez is going to get a renewed contract very soon, it’s done, just a few small details need to be sorted and we’ll announce it in the next few days or weeks,” Bartomeu told Uruguayan radio station Cadena Celeste.”It will be a great Christmas present, not necessarily for Luis as he already knows he’s going to continue here, but for football fans. Sterling & Bernardo fire City past Emery’s Arsenal

first_imgRaheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva got Manchester City’s Premier League title defence up and running with a deserved 2-0 win at Arsenal.Sterling made six starts in England’s semi-final run at the 2018 World Cup and only returned to training with City on Monday. He rewarded Pep Guardiola’s faith with a lively showing and a clinically dispatched 14th-minute opener. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Man Utd ready to spend big on Sancho and Haaland in January Who is Marcus Thuram? Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! The first game of Arsenal’s new era under Unai Emery often proved a thankless task but there were moments of encouragement before Silva settled the issue with a brilliantly taken second in the 64th minute.Petr Cech – preferred in the Arsenal line-up to new arrival Bernd Leno – saved sharply at his near post in the ninth minute after Sterling twisted past Shkodran Mustafi. But the veteran goalkeeper was grasping at fresh air when Sterling sashayed inside to lash home a shot from the edge of the box.Hector Bellerin gave Ederson his first serious task in the City goal but that Arsenal foray only led to a swift counter-attack that ended with Sergio Aguero testing the side-netting.Cech bailed out his ailing team-mates by thwarting Aymeric Laporte at point-blank range having parried Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick.50 – Raheem Sterling has scored 50 Premier League goals, with his strike against Arsenal only his third from outside the box. Bullseye. pic.twitter.com/ZNrwYRh0oa— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) August 12, 2018Guardiola responded to Arsenal pressure early in the second half by sending on Kevin De Bruyne with half an hour remaining and the Belgium midfielder was furious to be denied the chance of doubling City’s lead.Matteo Guendouzi’s error gave Aguero the freedom of the Arsenal half and the Argentina star shot too close to Cech as De Bruyne screamed for a square pass. The anguish did not last long as Benjamin Mendy made his way to the byline and cut the ball back for Silva to emphatically find the top-left corner.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a goal ruled out for offside and blazed over at close quarters as late lethargy brought errors into City’s game – something that will not have escaped their perfectionist manager. What it means: City show their class, plenty of work ahead for EmeryAfter Liverpool’s impressive close-season in the transfer market and emphatic 4-0 win over West Ham it was time for the champions to restate their own credentials. The manner in which City beguiled their hosts during the opening half hour showed they unquestionably remain the team to beat this term. Emery’s men fought gamely and he will get a better read on his team when they face Maurizio Sarri’s similarly embryonic project at Chelsea. Pat on the back: Sterling back in the groove with landmark goalFollowing tireless performances at Russia 2018 let down by errant finishing, Sterling will have taken great satisfaction in launching City’s bid for back-to-back titles with his 50th Premier League goal. He was a menace throughout the opening exchanges, leaving Bellerin and Mustafi with twisted blood. Boot up the backside: Tough introduction for GuendouziTo his credit, the 19-year-old Frenchman refused to hide under the relentless midfield examination that comes with tackling a Guardiola side. But his passing was increasingly wayward and the air-kick that let Aguero through spoke of mental and physical fatigue. More support from the abject Granit Xhaka would not have gone amiss. Key Opta stats- Manchester City are unbeaten in their last 10 opening Premier League fixtures (W9 D1), winning the last eight in a row.- Unai Emery is the first of Arsenal’s last six managers (including caretakers) to lose his first league game in charge of the club, since Steve Burtenshaw lost 0-1 against Tottenham in March 1986.- Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola remains unbeaten against Arsenal’s Emery in all competitions, winning seven and drawing four of the eleven meetings.- Stephan Lichtsteiner is the oldest outfield player to make his Premier League debut for Arsenal, at 34 years and 208 days.- Bernardo Silva has scored five goals in his last seven Premier League starts for Manchester City after failing to score in his first nine.Thank you for the support, Blues!A long journey ahead! mancity pic.twitter.com/aIMtOyK78j— Manchester City (@ManCity) August 12, 2018 What’s nextThe tough assignments keep rolling in for Emery, with a short trip to Stamford Bridge next weekend, while City face a Huddersfield Town team who have already suffered at the hands of “Sarri-ball”. read morelast_img read more

We have to recover from the game on Saturday but now all the focus is on trying to get through to the next round.”Defeat would not spell an end to their European odyssey, however, with the losers of Tuesday’s game entering the Europa League play-off round, but Celtic will naturally be aiming to book their place in the final Champions League qualifying round – where either Malmo or MOL Vidi will be waitinglast_img read more

The Gujarat skipper was fabulous while Karthik once again showed excellent form with the bat. Ravindra Jadeja towards the end played a handy cameo to take the total past the 200-run mark.Delhi were pretty substandard in the field, dropping catches and committing too many misfields. But amidst that they took a few cracking catches as well. Overall, it was a below par bowling show by them and only Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins fared decently. Off-spinner Jayant Yadav and Morris also bowled decently but South African pace sensation Kagiso Rabada endured an off day in office, leaking 59 runs from his four overs.Meanwhile, Gujarat will hope for a turnaround in their fortunes after two close finishes against Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiants. A point away from La Liga title, Real Madrid C.F. face Malaga

first_imgReal Madrid enter the final round of the Spanish league just one point away from ending a five-year wait to reclaim the domestic crown.Standing in their way is a Malaga side that has found its stride under former Madrid player Michel Gonzalez.Madrid, who visit Malaga on Sunday in the last round, are three points ahead of Barcelona. But Madrid must take at least a draw at La Rosaleda Stadium as Barcelona hold the head-to-head tiebreaker if both teams end up with the same number of points.”It’s going to be a difficult match against a rival that is playing phenomenally,” Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said Saturday. “We haven’t won it yet. We are very motivated and won’t quit until the last minute.”That point may be harder to come by than many Madrid fans would like as Malaga has proven to be a tough place to visit since Michel’s arrival.Michel took charge in March with Malaga trying to avoid a relegation fight. After a settling-in period, he has led Malaga to six wins in their last eight matches. That run includes victories in its last four home matches over Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla and Celta Vigo.Striker Sandro Ramirez has 14 goals for Malaga, seven coming during the late-season surge.Ignacio Camacho, a physical midfielder, holds the center, while Carlos Kameni is hard to beat in goal. However, Malaga will be without defender Diego Llorente, who is on loan from Madrid and not allowed to play.As an attacking midfielder, Michel helped Madrid win six Ligas, and he later returned as Madrid reserve team coach. His name consistently comes up as a potential future manager of Madrid.advertisementDespite Malaga’s recent form, some diehard Barcelona fans have concerns that Michel may not field his best side or push his players enough to beat his former club with the title on the line.Michel is having none of that.”A draw lets them (Madrid) become champions, but they will be facing a team that in the last 11 rounds, especially in the last eight rounds, has been playing at a great level,” Michel said Saturday. “Will Real Madrid become champion because Malaga allows it? No. The statistics and the football played say that Madrid is a great team and that Malaga is playing like one.”Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said he believed “100 percent in the professionalism of all coaches and players.”Barcelona host Eibar and must win to have any chance of the title.”If we get lucky, fantastic. We will celebrate it,” Luis Enrique said. “If not, we will congratulate the champion.”last_img read more
