Victim of mobile thief ends in hospital

first_imgPrint GARDAI in Henry Street are appealing for a taxi driver who was in the vicinity of Geraldine Villas on Thursday night August 6, to contact them.Two young men were walking home between the hours of 1 am and 2 am, when they were approached by a lone male who asked for their mobile phones.Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up The first of the young victims handed over the phone, but the second refused to do so and was subsequently hit with a pint glass by the culprit.The victims then ran off and were pursued by the culprit, before hailing down a passing taxi.They went to the Regional Hospital where the injured youth received stitches for his wound.Gardaí have established that the culprit, who was wearing a dark coloured hoodie, had followed the youth from the city centre, but are unaware where he went following the assault.They would like to contact the taxi driver concerned, who might be in a position to assist them in their investigations.Detective Garda Cathal O’Neill, Henry Street, is investigating and can be contacted with information on 212400.Henry Street are also investigating a similar incident on O’Curry Street, where a youth was walking on Saturday August 8, at around 9pm.The 14-year-old was approached by another youth who was wearing a white T-shirt and grey tracksuit pants, and who took the victim’s Nokia mobile phone.Gardaí say that the theft of mobile phones is a popular crime among opportunist thieves and ask parents to warn their children about this type of crime.It is also advised to record and retain the IMEI-the 15 digit number that identifies your phone can be found behind your battery. It is also recommended to register phones with network operators to make it easier to deactivate your phone if stolen.
