President Obama Wishes Sharon Jones A Speedy Recovery After White House Cancellation

first_imgPresident Obama and South by South West teamed up for the very first South by South Lawn festival today, bringing together musicians and community leaders for a day celebrating positive change. Among the many performers scheduled for the event was Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, bringing their unique brand of soul to the White House lawn.Unfortunately, health has been an on-and-off issue for Sharon Jones, who last year informed her fans that her cancer had returned. The singer had to cancel her appearance due to a bout of pneumonia, and the Dap-Kings were forced to perform without her at the festival.Naturally, our nation’s president wants the best for Ms. Jones, and sent her a get well soon note that she recently shared on social media. Check out the note from the president, below.Get well soon Ms. Jones!last_img read more

Goldfish Releases “Deep Of The Night” Remix By Slaptop

first_imgGoldfish have released an official remix of their single, “Deep of the Night” featuring Diamond Thug, which came out a few months a go with a touching music video. The remix comes from Slaptop, who also just provided opening sets for Goldfish at their GoldFest shows at the Mezzanine in San Francisco on March 10th & 11th. The original version of “Deep of the Night” serves as the lead single to Goldfish’s forthcoming album, due out later in 2017. Slaptop’s remix is a heavier club makeover, sprinkling in scarce Diamond Thug vocals into a decisively more rhythmic-centric house beat. The story of “Deep of the Night” begins where it all started for these life long musicians – the beaches nestled around Cape Town, South Africa. Dominic Peters and David Poole were driving home from late evening surf, casually listening to the radio and serendipitously stumbled across a first, and what turned out to be only – play of a new band called Diamond Thug. Dom and Dave were instantly hooked, and tracked down the band, who coincidentally also lived in Capetown. A jam session was set up at the Goldfish studios and so, a song was born. “We’re all seeking inspiration to create something great, but you never know when it will strike – it might be in the deep of the night,” the band states.Stream “Deep of the Night (Slaptop remix)” below:Goldfish’s forthcoming fifth album, Tipping the Scales, will be out in Spring 2017.last_img read more

Having performed alongside Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, and so many more, Scofield’s mastery has won him three GRAMMY Awards, including “Best Jazz Instrumental Album” for Past Present in 2016 and Country For Old Men in 2017, as well as the “Best Improvised Jazz Solo” for I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry in 2017. The Crooked Vines Release “Who To Be” Featuring Evan Thibodeaux

first_imgLeading up to their debut, self-titled album release in October of 2015, you could find The Crooked Vines performing throughout New Orleans in various small venues. Their freshman effort appeared with a fresh new sound, and although it lacked big studio publicity, it displayed a birth of artistic brilliance that was welcomed by a small-but-growing fan base.Their sophomore effort, Alive, was partly funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign, and as a result the band was able to take a new approach to the creative process: every member made contributions both large and small to the composition, arrangement, and studio production of the new songs. This album is rich with musical diversity. The lyrics run the full gamut of emotions and topics that touch many relatable nerves in the human experience, while the music spans a wide range of moods and sounds. Thought-provoking narratives move through hope, fierce independence, optimism (tempered by disappointment), acceptance of reality, lessons learned, and nostalgic looks back at former relationships. A theme of personal growth that weaves through many of the tracks seems to echo TCVs own growth between albums and their musical transformation.Perhaps no number better exemplifies that transformation than “Who To Be.” With an intro and fade-out that sound like a scratchy old vinyl record, it carries the listener on a journey from youthful self-doubt to mature self-confidence, with a beguiling score that instantly gets under your skin and draws you back for repeat listens. An ethereal instrumental segment is worthy of its own track, sending tingles up the spine with eerie horn lines and a “spirit-world” vocal moment. Just when you think this number can’t get any better, a rap segment (written and performed by Evan Thibodeaux) adds a new layer. His continued commentary through the balance of the number brings a male voice that plays off lead singer Mikayla Braun’s for an energetic exchange. The pace shifts upward yet again into a confident stride in the wrap-up, reflecting the storyteller’s newfound self assurance. The first single, also the title track, “Alive” ponders the individual determination to rise above the dreary sea of workday conformity. It previews the wider-ranging musical tone of the album, and a screaming guitar solo by George Wilde (Sexual Thunder) infuses the track with even more energy.Alive is scheduled to be released November 10th 2017 on all major platforms. The Crooked Vines will host an album release party at The Howlin’ Wolf New Orleans on Thursday 11/9 supported by Aaron Benjamin and Kathryn Rose Wood. The full project is available for pre-order now via iTunes, and will release on all major platforms on Friday 11/10.
