DONEGAL’S ICONIC DOE CASTLE TO OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

first_imgDoe Castle in all its splendour.Donegal’s famous Doe Castle is to open to the public from Sunday next, July 12th, 2015.Local group Mevagh Moving Forward, in conjunction with Donegal Local Development Company, have arranged for guided tours of the grounds and the Castle, where visitors will be able to explore and be given a historic tour of this wonderful building.Following restoration works at the end of the last century, the Castle has been closed to members of the public ever since.Following discussions between Moving Mevagh Forward and DLDC with Minister Joe McHugh, the Minister raised the matter with the Minister for the Office of Public Works, Simon Harris TD, who was strongly supportive of the initiative.A proposal by MMF and DLDC to set up a TÚS initiative in order to facilitate greater public access at Doe Castle was submitted and accepted by the Department, subject to certain Health and Safety issues which are being addressed.Doe Castle plays a very important historic and heritage role in the area; its walls have seen many famous figures from throughout Irish history, such as Red Hugh O’Donnell, Owen Roe O’Neill and the infamous Maolmhuire an Bhata Bhuí.The location of Doe Castle, so near to the Wild Atlantic Way, has a history of attracting tourists to the area and with the addition of the very popular WAW, this will only help enhance greater visitor numbers to the Castle and help the community reap the benefits of this positive brand and initiative. Its proximity to Fanad Lighthouse, a Signature Point along the WAW, is yet another strongpoint and will also encourage visitors to the area. The grounds are presently being opened by Jean Moore, Doe each day and this arrangement will continue. The keep (fortified tower within the Castle) will be open on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays throughout the summer with guided tours starting at 11am and as requested during the day. There will be no charge. The official opening will take place on Friday, July 10th at 7.30pm in the Castle grounds by Minister of State, Joe McHugh TD.DONEGAL’S ICONIC DOE CASTLE TO OPEN TO THE PUBLIC was last modified: July 7th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more
