Hiljainen Kansa — Geocache of the Week

first_imgLocation:FinlandN 65° 05.635 E 028° 54.329 One of the wonderful things about geocaching is how it leads you to locations you may have otherwise never heard of. Case in point: GC1D4ZP.Today’s Geocache of the Week takes us to a remote field in northeastern Finland. As you drive along Highway 5 and look to the east, you will discover an army of over 1000 scarecrows in a field. The peaceful mob is made of wooden crosses, decorated with straw hair and bright clothes, which are refreshed twice a year. The unusual figures are an art installation titled Hiljainen Kansa (“Quiet People” in Finnish) by dancer, choreographer, and artist Reijo Kela. They appeared just north of the town of Suomussalmi in 1994 after exhibiting in three other locations. The trail to the cache can be quite muddy at certain times of the year, so pack your boots or prepare to go barefoot. The description says it’s small, but there’s plenty of room for SWAG and trackables if you have any to trade.Visitors often speak of how walking amongst the figures can be calming and bring about self-reflection. A good thing when thinking about what to write in your log in addition to “TFTC”.Hiljainen Kansa — Silent PeopleView from the roadComing closerThe Quiet PeopleDifferent heights, clothes, and “personalities”Geocachers can blend right inPack your wellies!A birdseye viewA view from the nearby cafe Continue to explore some of the most amazing geocaches around the world.Check out all of the Geocaches of the Week on the Geocaching blog. He thrives in those situations.”Unai Emery should bring him in from the cold. But he won’t.”If he plays Ozil and they win, he has to keep playing him, and the manager doesn’t want that. The manager wants him out.”And if that’s the plan then they are going to have to swallow a pill and get rid of him in January come what may.” last_img read more

Victim tells court she relived fear of Brazeaus alleged attack listening to

first_imgJorge BarreraAPTN National NewsThe sound of a weeping woman’s voice filled the Gatineau, Que., courtroom Tuesday, on the second day of suspended Senator Patrick Brazeau’s trial on assault and sexual assault charges. The Crown played two recordings of 911 calls made shortly after 9 a.m. on Feb. 7, 2013, from the rented Gatineau house where Brazeau lived with a woman. The second day of the trial began with a continuation of the victim’s testimony of the alleged break-up attack she endured at the hands of Brazeau, who was still a Conservative Senator at the time.Brazeau has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The 911 recordings were of a woman’s voice who, through sobs, said her partner had assaulted her and she needed police help.“My (partner) hit me,” said the woman.-snip-“Is he in the house?” said the male police officer who answered the second 911 call.“Yes,” said the woman, between sobs.“What’s his name,” said the officer.“Patrick Brazeau,” said the woman. As the audio played, the victim began to cry quietly as she stood facing the judge, Brazeau and his lawyers to her right, the Crown prosecutors to her left. The victim testified before the Crown played the 911 recordings that she went to the kitchen to call police after Brazeau sexually assaulted her with his finger a second time while she was on her hands and knees on the stairs. She said Brazeau had his arm around her neck and used his fingers to penetrate her buttocks area. The victim said the land-line telephone in the kitchen was disconnected and then she went to the bathroom to call the police with her cell phone. She didn’t know who disconnected the land-line.The first call from 911 at 9:04 a.m. was cut short. The 911 operator asked , “what is your emergency?”The woman on the other end said, “Is this the police?”Then the line went dead. The 911 operator called back and it rang about 8 times with no answer. The victim testified she didn’t remember making the first phone call. She called 911 back at 9:06 a.m. and her called was answered by the male police officer. The Crown asked the victim what she felt while listing to the 911 call.“It made me relive what I was feeling that day, the fear,” she said. The Crown submitted photographs taken of the victim’s injuries shortly after police arrived at the home. Judge Valmont Beaulieu ruled that the photos of injuries to the woman’s buttocks area could not be published by the media. The jeans the victim wore that day were also submitted as evidence and the victim held them in her hands. The button to fasten the jeans was missing and the zipper was broken, she said.A button was found on the floor by police. The victim has testified Brazeau forcibly yanked down her pants to sexually assault her.The victim also testified how she found her ripped purple turtleneck hidden beneath Brazeau’s dresser in the bedroom after she returned to the house with two officers to retrieve some of her belongings later that fateful Thursday. The victim testified Monday she was holding the sweater in her hands when Brazeau allegedly attacked her. She said Brazeau ripped the sweater. The sweater was entered as evidence Monday along with a ripped piece of cloth. She said the sweater was left on the stairs after the attack. The victim also told the court she deleted intimate videos of her and Brazeau from a video camera when she returned to the bedroom with police at the time she found the sweater hidden.Tuesday began with the Crown asking her to draw, roughly, the places in the house where she said Brazeau attacked her. With black and pink markers she was asked to mark the places where he sexually assaulted her. She was also asked to draw a stick-man Brazeau to show where he was during the first sexual assault. The Crown also asked the victim to mark with a pink x the place where Brazeau slammed her head against a wall. The Crown also asked the victim about pictures Brazeau took down from the wall following the alleged attack. The victim said she saw Brazeau take down some of the pictures after she called police. She said she didn’t see him take down the photograph of her, Brazeau and Prime Minister Stephen Harper. She also said she didn’t know who ripped the photograph, which has the stamp of the Prime Minister’s Office at the bottom.Police photo of broken railingThe trial continues Tuesday afternoon with more from the victim along with testimony from the two police officers who were first at the home following the 911 [email protected]@JorgeBarreralast_img read more

Terrell Suggs Surrendered Firearms after Domestic Case

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs was mandated to turn in several firearms last month in compliance to a domestic case involving his longtime girlfriend, Candace Williams, according to Justin Fenton and Jeff Zriebiec of the Baltimore Sun.“The guns were surrendered over to police pursuant to the court order, and they [Suggs and Williams] are resolving their issues,” Suggs’ attorney Warren Alperstein told the Sun Thursday. “All I can tell you is that he’s in rightful and lawful possession of the guns but turned them over pursuant to the requirements of the law.”Baltimore County Circuit Court records show that Suggs filed a custody complaint against Williams on Nov. 19. There was a report filed by Williams shortly afterwards, according to Alperstein. Baltimore County police were called to the home Suggs on Nov. 21, but no reports were taken.Alperstein expects for all domestic-related issues to be resolved in a court hearing to be held next week. The Ravens senior vice president of public and community relations, Kevin Byrne, said that the team is aware of Suggs’ off the field situation, but did not wish to release any comments on the matter. Suggs also chose not to comment.Charles E. Brooks, Williams’ attorney, also refused to comment when the Baltimore Sun reached him at his home Thursday night.Suggs and Williams have had a rocky relationship that dates back to 2009. Williams, who is the mother of Suggs two children and former fiancée, alleged in court documents in December 2009 that Suggs knocked her down and spilled bleach on her after an argument over game-day tickets. The detailed complaint alleged that Suggs threw a soap dispenser at her head, hit her in the chest with his hand, and held a bottle of bleach over her and their son.Williams filed a protective order against the Ravens veteran and was granted a temporary protective order, but she withdrew the order a month later in an attempt to reconcile. Suggs was not investigated or charged with a crime involving this incident.Suggs handing over the guns has come to light after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher murdered his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins last week after the two were going through domestic issues. He then proceeded to the Chiefs’ practice facility and committed suicide in front of head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli.Belcher was the legal handgun owner of the weapon used in the killings.Suggs will attempt to play this week against the Washington Redskins after tearing his right biceps in Sunday’s 23-20 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He returned to the practice field Thursday and has vowed to continue to play through the injury in order to help the team clinch the AFC North title. read more
